Mushrooms
The geographic characteristics of the lands that surround the Ponts village, which are close to the Segre River, and the local vegetation of the area of La Baronia de Rialb, make possible one of the most popular "sports" in Catalunya: "The bolets harvest". The bolet (mushroom) is one of the essential ingredients of the catalan gastronomy. Nevertheless, the great interest, that this product generates, comes from the playful aspects of this practice, which is a way of knowing not only the catalan culture, but also its geography. Most of the mushrooms are bigger and have better quality when the autumn gets closer, during the rainy season. The equipment of the "boletaire" (mushroom man): - A wicker basket: They allow the air get in touch with the mushrooms, prevent the mushrooms from getting squashed, and help to release the spores that remain on the floor. Never use a plastic bag!
- A knife or pocket knife.
- A brush to clean the dirt, to prevent taking home insects as an unexpected present.
- A thin lens. Although it is no essential, it helps to recognize tiny details.
- Raincoat and wellies
Avises: - To go with someone that knows about the mushrooms, because there are some poisonous ones.
- To carry a map, a compass, and a cellular phone, because it is easy to get confused and even get lost in the forest.
- The mushroom search must be done by eyesight and not with rakes or similar tools that may damage the soil.
- We should cut the mushrooms by the feet with a knife with a thin blade, in order to avoid damaging the Mycelial threads, which are the underground parts of the mushroom.
